NEW YORK, NY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1999The Board of Directors of Delhaize America, Inc., parent company of the Food Lion and Kash n' Karry supermarket chains, has named Joseph C. Hall President of its Food Lion, Inc. subsidiary. Bill McCanless, Chief Executive Officer of Delhaize America, will also remain Chief Executive Officer of Food Lion.
Mr. Hall, 49, will be responsible for Food Lion's 1,120 supermarkets and eight distribution centers, operating in 11 Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states. He has nearly 25 years of supermarket industry experience and has served the Company as its Senior Vice President of Operations and Chief Operating Officer since 1995. He joined Food Lion as a buyer in 1976 and held numerous positions before being promoted to vice president of purchasing in 1988. Mr. Hall has also served as vice president of marketing, and vice president of the company’s Southern and Central Divisions, and is credited with creating the category management department for the Company. Hall was appointed to the Food Lion Board of Directors in 1995 and now serves on the Delhaize America Board.
Mr. McCanless said, "We are pleased to have Joe's talent and experience as he assumes new responsibilities at Food Lion, the largest supermarket chain within the Delhaize America group. Joe will play an important role as Food Lion continues to implement an aggressive growth program of adding new stores in and around its current markets and remodeling older ones."
A native of Salisbury, N.C., Mr. Hall earned a bachelors degree from Wake Forest University. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Food Dealers Association and was named the organization’s 1998 Grocer of the Year. Mr. Hall is also a Retail Advisor for the Children's Miracle Network.
