Delhaize America Debuts Two New Store Concepts
Concepts to Cater to Different Customer Niches

Salisbury, NC — Demonstrating its flexibility, two Delhaize America companies today debut two new store concepts that cater to different customer niches.

Delhaize America’s Kash n’ Karry subsidiary cuts the ribbon on a new 49,000-square-foot store in Orlando, FL. that features a unique, round design and layout that enhances convenience for shoppers on the go. Notable features include a 35-foot tall atrium that spotlights the international produce department and draws attention to the store’s signature café where shoppers can pick up a meal or begin their weekly shopping trip.

In Virginia Beach, VA., Food Lion breaks from convention, unveiling today a 17,500-square-foot fresh market concept that caters to neighborhood shoppers looking for convenience, quality, style and expanded fresh departments. The Village Market by Food Lion is designed as a neighborhood shopping experience, featuring a large selection of prepared foods, wines, Old World baked goods and specialty produce. The local Nara Sushi restaurant will supply the store with fresh sushi daily. The Village Market by Food Lion will honor Extra Low Prices advertised in weekly Food Lion circulars.

“Delhaize America companies are as diverse as their customers. The debut of these two new concepts shows how our companies anticipate and innovate to meet the needs of different niches in their respective markets,” said Bill McCanless, chief executive officer. “We hope shoppers enjoy visiting these new concept stores, and we hope to apply the lessons learned in each location to other stores.”

One of the nation’s largest supermarket companies, Delhaize America owns more than 1,200 stores under the names Food Lion, Kash n’ Karry and Save n’ Pack. The $10.2 billion dollar company plans to open 85 new stores in 2000. With the addition of Hannaford Bros., which entered into an agreement in August to be acquired by Delhaize America, Delhaize America will have over 1,400 stores throughout the eastern United States from Maine to Florida, with total projected annual revenue for 2000 of approximately $15 billion and more than 116,000 full-time and part-time employees. Delhaize America is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbols DZA and DZB.
