Delvita, the Czech subsidiary of the Delhaize 'The Lion' Group, will open on December 4, 1998 its first supermarket in Bratislava. The Slovak Republic becomes the 8th country where Delhaize 'The Lion' is present. The other countries are Belgium, the U.S.A., France, the Czech Republic, Greece, Thailand and Indonesia.
The sales surface of the new supermarket is 950 m². About 50 people will be employed. In the beginning, 5.000 products will be presented, most of them being delivered by local suppliers. The building is rented by a long term lease.
In the near future, the new supermarket will be supplied by the distribution centre which Delvita opened last week in the east of the Czech Republic, more precisely in Prostejov, a city situated on the road connecting the north and the south of Moravia. In 1996, Delvita opened a first distribution centre in the west of the Czech Republic.
The second distribution centre has a surface of 12.800 m². Supermarkets in the eastern Czech Republic as well as those of the Slovakian Republic will be supplied by this second distribution centre, where 70 people are working.
Delvita is the third food retailer in Czechia. Delvita was founded in 1991 by the Delhaize 'The Lion' Group and the Parik brothers. In 1998, Delvita will open 16 supermarkets, 15 in the Czech Republic and 1 in the Slovak Republic. Thanks to these considerable efforts, Delvita will be operating 59 supermarkets by the end of 1998.
In 1997, Delvita achieved sales of CZK 6.07 billion (BEF 6.9 billion), an increase of 63.8% compared to 1996. During the first semester of 1998, the turnover increased by 51% to CZK 4 billion (BEF 4.6 billion). At the end of 1997 Delvita employed 3,636 people.
In 1997, the Belgian food retailer Delhaize 'The Lion' achieved sales of BEF 508.6 billion and net profits of BEF 4.9 billion. At the end of 1997 Delhaize 'The Lion' employed 107,200 staff members. By the end of 1998, Delhaize 'The Lion' will be operating 1,908 stores.
